In the late afternoon, visit the renowned Dambulla Cave Temple, an ancient rock temple that dates back to the first century B.C. The first cave houses a 47-foot-long reclining Buddha statue carved from the rock, surrounded by deities connected to Buddhism. In Anuradhapura, they will embark on a sightseeing tour of Sri Lanka’s ancient capital, a city celebrated for its impressive ruins. The highlight of the tour will be the city’s grand dagobas, such as Ruvanveliseya, dating back to the 2nd century B.C., Jetawanarama, and Thuparama, which enshrines the Buddha’s collarbone. Visitors will also see the sacred Bo Tree, planted over 2,250 years ago from a branch of the tree under which the Buddha attained Enlightenment, making it the oldest authenticated tree in the world. Elephants are taken to the river twice daily for bathing, and young elephants under three years old are bottle-fed by mahouts and volunteers, adding a unique charm to the visit.
